Parent Process for Concerns Parent Process for Concerns Who Should you Call if you Have a Question Concerning your Child at School? We are committed to addressing each issue in a timely manner and resolving each incident in the best interest of your family and the District. Although calling the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendents may seem like the best and quickest way to address your issue please be advised that they will refer your case to the appropriate department for resolution. Thank you for following the outlined procedures listed below, as they will assist in a timely resolution. Standardized Testing and Accountability Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Each spring, students in grades two through eleven take a STAR test. The STAR Program looks at how well schools and students are performing.

Students take tests in math, reading, writing, science, and history. Teachers and parents can use test results to improve student learning. The STAR Program includes four tests: the California Standards Tests, the California Modified Assessment, the California Alternate Performance Assessment, and the Standards-based Tests in Spanish. Additionally, schools throughout California are required to provide information to the community in the form of an annual School Accountability Report Card (SARC). These report cards provide a variety of data about a school’s student achievement, environment, resources, and demographics.

Updated SARC’s for the 2009-2010 school year (published in 2010-2011) are posted on the District’s website and a hard copy is available at each school site. Your principal will be able to answer any questions regarding your school’s SARC. SELAC The School English Learners Advisory Council (SELAC) and the District English Learners Advisory Council (DELAC) are composed of teachers and parents whose main concerns are the welfare of students who are English language learners. SELAC is a school-based committee whose purpose is to provide advice to the principal and staff regarding programs and services for English learners and to provide information to parents. DELAC is made up of representatives from each school’s English Learner Advisory Committee, DELAC’s role is to advise the district on programs and services for English learner students.

Researcher Anne T. Henderson summarized it best in her findings on nearly 50 studies related to parental involvement and concluded: School programs which have strong parent involvement produce students who perform better than otherwise identical programs that do not involve parents as thoroughly. Children whose parents help them at home and stay in touch with the school score higher than children of similar aptitude and family background.

Also, schools where children are failing improve dramatically when parents are called in to assist. These committees provide opportunities for parents to volunteer and serve as valuable assets to our schools and communities. Students who are ill or injured during the school day must obtain a pass from a teacher or yard duty supervisor before coming to the Health Office. Extreme emergencies are the exception!

Student Health Students in school are expected to be well enough to participate in ALL school activities, including recess. Please do not send your child to school if he/she feels sick or has a fever of over 100˚ F. Students who are ill will be sent home! If your child has been ill with a fever of over 100˚, please be sure that he/she is fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. No school, regardless of area or socio-economic level, is exempt. Help control the spread of head lice by checking your child’s hair weekly, instructing your child not to share hair accessories with other students, and notifying the school if your child has head lice. (This can be done anonymousl.) SJUSD maintains a “NO NIT” policy—students sent home with head lice will not be allowed to return to class until their hair is completely free of lice and nits. Medications If your child needs to take medication at school, you must submit written parental permission and include written instructions from a qualified health care provider/physician detailing the method, amount, and time schedule for the administration of the medication. This rule applies to aspirin, Tylenol, cough syrup, Ritalin, and any other prescription or non-prescription medication. All medications, including cough drops and vitamins, must be stored in the Health Office—-students may not have any medication in their possession at school.

Medications must be brought to the Health Office in the original container, clearly labeled with the student’s name, the type of medication, and directions for administration. Contact the Health Clerk if you need further information and/or a Permit to Take Medication at School form. SJUSD Board Policy Regarding Food/Nutrition and Class Celebrations The Superintendent or designee shall establish procedures whereby students and parents/guardians may participate in the selection of foods of good nutritional quality for school menus and ensure that all food and beverages meet the nutritional standards required by the State of California. School and class celebrations during the school day should occur after the last lunch period (except for am kindergarten) and should be limited to no more than one celebration per class per month when non-nutritious food/beverage are served. When non-nutritious food/beverage is served a healthy alternative should be offered. All other celebrations during the school day must include foods and beverages that meet the nutritional standards established by the district. Home-prepared goods are not permitted on school campuses.

To facilitate compliance, a list of acceptable food and beverage items and healthy celebration alternatives will be provided to all school Principals for distribution to teachers and parents, and made available on the SJUSD website. One School-One Community-Connected. BE INVOLVED!!!
