What is Digital Scrapbooking? Digital Scrapbooking is like traditional scrapbooking, except that you use your computer and additional software to create your pages. It is so easy and no messes to clean up off the dining room table before you can serve dinner. How many times have you created a traditional scrapbook page to look at it and think, “wow, I should have done this, or placed that there, or left this off” In digital scrapbooking it is so easy to redo a page if you find you do not like it. You start with your background, just like in traditional scrapbooking. You then add your embellishments in layers, placing them exactly where you want them to be. Do you want the edge of your tag on top of your ribbon?
Then place your ribbon on your page and add a new layer above it adding your tag. Now you can resize, rotate and position it where you want it on your page. Add your photo, add a frame on top or place photo corners on it.
Type in your journaling or leave a place so that you can write it in later. You keep adding embellishments and layering until you get it the way you want it. If you don’t like it, start over, the ideas are endless, it is up to your imagination and creativity and you don’t waste a thing. What is Hybrid Scrapbooking? Hybrid scrapbooking is the combination of traditional and digital scrapbooking combined. You can create just the amount you want digitally, then print and add traditional items to it after printing. So you do a background and a border or a few graphics, you then print out your page and add traditional ribbons, flowers or tags or whatever you desire to it.
What are the advantages to digital scrapbooking? Where in traditional scrapbooking you make a mistake, more than likely it stays. In digital scrapbooking if you make a mistake it is easy to fix without ruining expensive paper or embellishments. In traditional scrapbooking when you purchase papers or embellishments, once you use them you have to purchase more, if they are still available. In digital scrapping once you purchase a digital kit you can use it over and over as many times as you like. What program do I need? This is a very tricky question.
You ask other digital scrappers and you will almost always get a different answer. Computer software is a personal thing.
It is based upon ease of use, a favorite company, or price. So, I will try to keep a very open mind and I will give you a few ideas. First and foremost I too have my favorites and I am not a person that likes to spend a lot of money. I do however, want a program that does what I want it to do and I do not want to spend hours learning any program. Don’t get me wrong, in all software you have some learning, but you do not want to get frustrated while doing so. Let’s consider at least 2 of the above, ease of use and price.
I will also give you my opinion on the software if I have used it at all. You can do a search to find the homepages of the software. First, look to see what you already have on your computer. Some computer company’s package different software on your computers before you buy them, so see what is there first. What you are looking for in a program is the following: Does the program accept layering- can you add items on top of each other and still manipulate each item separately? Can you import your own images from a file, scanner, or camera? Can you add shadows for dimension?
Can you rotate objects? Can you create images in 12x12, 8x8, or 6x6 sizes?
Or in pixel size of 3600x3600 or less? Can you set the dpi or resolution of an image?
Can you save or export as a.jpg or.png file format? If you have a program on your computer, whether it is a photo program, graphics program, or a greeting card program then try it out and see what you can do with it. You may not need to buy a program at all. Free Programs Open Office – This program is a compatible office program to Microsoft Office.
The Draw part of the program has layering capabilities and you can rotate images, add drop shadows and some filtering possibilities. It is very easy to use as a drawing program. You must use the export to save your page in any other format than the default.
When using the program I found it to be easy to use but did not like the idea that when saving, it will only save at 96 dpi. For good printing you really need at least 200 dpi. Gimp – I can not give you an opinion on Gimp. I have downloaded it but I have not used it. I do know of many that use Gimp only for scrapbooking and there are many tutorials for Gimp online. Paint.net - I can not give you an honest opinion on Paint.net/ It is used by many for scrapbooking, as well as creating graphics.
ScrapbookFlair – This program is a little hard to use when you first start. It is a basic program with a few flaws. You can import your own graphics and backgrounds, add text, and import your photos.
It does not, however, allow you to do any rotating of embellishments at all. It does not have a way of adding drop shadows for dimension if you so desire it. It will export in a.jpg format only. Serif Draw 4 – I can not give you a description of this program as I can no longer use it on my computer.
World of warcraft. I have Vista and this free older version does not work with Vista. I do know that many are using it to create scrapbook pages.
Purchased Software Scrapbook Software Only Memory Mixer by Lasting Impressions - This software seems to be so easy to use and does allow the importing of your own backgrounds and embellishments. It comes with many Quick Mixes, backgrounds, layout templates, and embellishments. You can create scrapbook pages and calendars. You can add music and videos and create photo cd’s or dvd’s.
This is a very versatile program and good for beginners. Scrapbook Factory Deluxe – Very easy to use software includes many templates, backgrounds, and embellishments. You can import your own items and save in.jpg format.
Scrapbook Max Scrapbooks Plus American Greetings Scrapbooks and More There are many more to choose from on the market so do some research and check out the reviews. Graphics Programs Paint Shop Pro - This, I will say, is my favorite, although I do use an older version.
The newer versions have had a few changes made since the company was bought by Corel. It is far easier to use than Adobe Photoshop and does everything that I want it to do as a scrapbook graphics designer. The price is more affordable for beginners.

Adobe Photoshop – A very useful graphics program but a little hard for a beginner. It offers many capabilities for almost all aspects of graphic design. It is a very costly program.
Adobe Photoshop Elements – A very useful program for graphic design as well as scrapbooking. It is a little more affordable for the average user.
Print Shop – Very easy to use program for designing posters, cards, banners, etc. Scrapbook pages can be created using this program as well. There are many more programs on the market in all of these areas so read reviews and shop. Can I Print my pages? Yes by all means, do print out your pages. Whether you have a professional printing service do this or you do this on your home printer is entirely up to you.
I have printed at home and I have had great success with it. No, I do not have a wide format printer. This is a printer that will print in 12 inch width. So how do I print? Say I have done a 12 x 12 page and I want to print this out. I open my saved.jpg page in my software and I resize it to 8x8.
I print it on my home printer using either white acid free cardstock, or matte or glossy photo paper. I trim and place in an 8x8 scrapbook album.
I have many family history books that I do pages for and sometimes I will just place the trimmed page into a top loading archival clear sheet protector and place in my family books. I have had some pages printed professionally. This sometimes can be very expensive depending on where you have them printed. You will have to take into consideration the quality of the printing as well as the price.
I have been pleased with some and very disappointed in others. What ways can I share my pages? Other than printing and placing in albums, with digital scrapbooking it is so easy to share your pages with family and friends. There are many online scrapbook communities that allow you to post your pages in their galleries. You can then share that site with your family and friends.
There are many online photo sharing sites as well. Do give credit to the designer of your digital kit when posting to a web site, this is just good scrapbooking etiquette. Another way is to create a slideshow of your pages and burn that to a cd or dvd and give to family and friends. What type of file will my download come in? There are 2 major formats that you will find that digital downloads will arrive in.
One is the most common.zip format and the other is the.rar format. Below are names of free programs that can be found on the web to open these files types. For Zip files: Just Zip It CAM Unzip For RAR files: 7-ZIP Author: Debbie Sumner Scrapbook Kit Artist for.
