Up until having the same problem as you I have never condoned buying 'non original' products off the internet ( I reckon 90% are knockoff), but as BMW are basically a set of thieves, in this case I would highly recommend having a search around, type in 'sat nav upgrades uk' in to google, top one is for Rusty. These work OK. My original 2008 SATNAV CD was damaged and scratched from what I imagine was a lifetime of sitting in the cd drive and bouncing around in the normal use of the car. It started failing (locking up) when I used it and I had to keep removing the disk to reset the IDrive. I rang BMW for a like for like replacement, I would happily of paid £30-£40 but they wouldn't sell me one, they only sold the latest version.

The latest version would cost me £180, but apparently I would also need my software upgrading which would be another £200. So for BMW to upgrade an original CD supplied by them and only ever used in their equipment as it was designed to be, and damaged due to no fault of my own, they wanted nearly £400. £400 its a JOKE, it doesn't even accept full postcodes!!! Any one who buys an original is mad, BMW why don't you just drop your price and make a few quid and offer good service, rather then forcing potential customers to shop elsewhere.Rant Over.

Feb 28, 2013 - MKIII systems can run a vastly improved software version as well, which is a huge cosmetic improvement over the MKI and MKII's software. MKIII computers are the first to handle split-screen mode and significantly better GPS-Navigation function and directions. CD-ROMs are still the only accepted media for. BMW SAT Nav CD; BMW SAT Nav DVD Disc; Browse. The Best Sat Navs In the World Right Now image. You now need to take this disc to the car and follow these steps: - Turn the key to position 1 and let everything load up - Keep the drivers door open throughout this process, DO NOT close it.

Not sure if the Technical forum is more suited to my query. I have a 2005 3-series with Professional navigation with a Europe Professional 2005-2 DVD. The unit has 2 slots (which I think looks cool!?!?) a normal audio CD slot and below the DVD drive for the maps. How much will BMW quote me for the DVD - is it better to go to a third party online dealer - will the DVD be an original BMW disc?

Do I need to update the software / firmware - can I find out the version myself or is it for BMW Service to give me that? Can I get the 3D buildings on my system? Thanks for reading. I recently bought a third party cd and it was rubbish.

Was by recommendation from this forum as well. Rustys dvds i think. Was told yep u get speed cameras, traffic light cams and 7 digit postcode entry, which are added to Point of Interests.

Catch was you can only display one type of POI at a time on the map. Also the postcodes are uploaded to the POI, so everytime you search for a postcode you have to go through POI which is tedious. Then to display speed cams you have to search for them again as searching for anything else on the POI (like postcodes) wipes the previous criteria (in this case speed cams). I also noticed the actual sat nav was a lot slower. And my AM/FM/AUX/CD stopped working lol. I've reverted back to 2008 and its all good now. Not sure how other third party DVDs or the BMW works though.

It might be the same. Hopefully someone can suggest a disk which doesn't have the issues mentioned above. I recently bought a third party cd and it was rubbish. There is no way around this as that is how the BMW Nav works. Since I only had DVD-R discs I burnt to one (using ImgBurn) and as an experiment tried it in the DVD drive - it partially seemed to work in that the system accepted the disc (there was no 'Please insert the Navigation Disc' message), however trying to go to a previous entered destination or viewing the map did not work - so I suspect the drive is DVD+R as suggested?

Not too sure about that sort of stuff mate, but when I put that backup disc I got on eBay in the drive it told me that an update was in progress and to power down for 5 mins. Did that while I fitted new Velcro bits for my mats then fired it back up and all was well! I've now seen those discs for £9.99 delivered on eBay. I tried a DVD+R and although there's no error message on inserting the disc, when you try to input a new destination no information appears (like City, Street) and when you go to view the map view you get a solid dark green area filling the screen - no map info! Sigh:-( Help please!

This is a CCC system. I tired a thirdy party disc and burned my own DVD disc as well, but the CCC unit in my car just didn't get on with either, so am just using the OEM disc. I know other people have been fine, I wonder if BMW had different sources for the CCC DVD drives, and some drives simply cannot read non OEM discs as well as others?? I know Apple certainly have different suppliers for their LCDs/Opitical drives/Hard drives.
